The Haileybury Association is delighted to highlight and support former parent, John Miller, who has recently co-written and published his first book. After Our Parents Won the War explores boarding school life through the experiences of an Old Aldenhamian and an Old Wykehamist, and is likely to resonate strongly with many Old Haileyburians of that era. OH Sophie Miller (Melvill, 2019), John’s daughter, reflects on how her father’s new venture has inspired her, while illustrating how the bonds of boarding school life can remain a meaningful and enduring community long after leaving. Sophie commented:
“Last year my father, John Martin Miller graduated with an MA in English Literature from Durham University, where he completed his BA many years earlier. His thesis was focused around the Asian novels of Joseph Conrad. Returning to the university marked a meaningful, full-circle moment in his academic journey. Today, he remains an active member of the Durham community, serving as a mentor within the Business School and preparing to begin his PhD. From a young age, my father taught me that no dream is beyond reach, and that true leadership is rooted in kindness, generosity, and a commitment to helping others succeed. After Our Parents Won the War reflects the deep affection and sense of connection that many boarding school alumni feel towards their former schools. I, too, have found myself returning to Haileybury several times over the past few years.
Written in collaboration with his co-author and lifelong friend Andrew Powell, the memoir captures a remarkable moment in British history through the experiences and memories of two young boys in a prep school. Having followed the project closely, I can attest to the care, dedication, and scholarship that went into bringing these stories to life. I couldn’t be more proud of my father.”
